Varsity Red Takes Second at Lapeer

Yesterday was a solid performance for our Red team as they headed to Lapper, MI for the Lightning Duals Invitational. Six teams (Bedford, Lapeer, Byron, Flushing, Grand Blanc, DeWitt) were invited to the tourney that was ran in a round robin style with each team facing one another. The Mules had a tough draw with the 4th ranked D2 team in Michigan, DeWitt, as the opening dual. The Mules dropped the first dual 15-46 with wins from Chase Grzegorczyk (112lbs), Cade Sutterfield (119), Blake Wingate (215) and Austin Emerson (void at 285).

Second dual of the day was against Flushing. This was a back and forth dual that was tied at 36 when the two heavies took to the mat for the final match. Senior captain Emerson dominated and got a first period pin to give the Mules the 42-36 victory. Other winners were Sutterfield (pin at 119), Mason Rimmer (void at 125), freshman Trevor Bair (pin at 130), Nathan Sailor (pin at 135), Neil Antrassian (pin at 152), Colin Jagielski (pin at 171).

Next up for the Mules was the host team, Lapeer. Unfortunately, Lapeer was depleted due to injuries resulting with half the matches against DeWitt's B team. Final score was 66-9.

Fourth dual was against Byron. The Mules dominated this dual from start to finish with a final score of 60-15. Grzegorczyk, Sutterield, Rimmer, Jeff Johnson, Antrassian, Jagielski, Gandee, Wingate, and Emerson were all winners.

Final match of the day ended up being for second place against Grand Blanc. This was a dual where Bedford trailed until the 171lb match and then never looked back. At that point in the dual, Bedford trailed 21-25. Sophomore Colin Jagielski took the mat and after giving up an early takedown came back and dominated his opponent. He had the TF locked up but was able to get the pin and put the Mules ahead 27-25. Senior captain Hunter Gandee kept the momentum going with a first period pin. This made the score 33-25 and sealed the victory for the Mules since Grand Blanc did not have a heavyweight. However, that didn't stop Blake Wingate from getting a first period pin. Final score was 45-25 Mules. Other winners included Sutterfield (pin at 119), Sailer (135), and Senior captain Neil Antrassian (pin at 152).

Next up for the Mules are the SEC Individual Championships that will be held at Bedford High School this coming Saturday, February 3rd. Come out and support the Mules.
